The 2020 NBA All-Star Slam Dunk contest got significant press on Sunday, not from excitement of the event, but because of its exceedingly poor TV ratings. In fact, more viewers tuned into TV Land’s annual B List Celebrity Dunk Tank contest on Saturday night than they did the NBA Slam Dunk contest.
The Dunk Tank contest, which featured B List actors like Michael Sheen, Bella Thorne, and Lee Pace, garnered 17.2 million viewers, about 12 million more than the traditionally popular NBA exhibition.
“I’ve never received this kind of notoriety,” said Adelaide Kane, who starred in the made-for-TV holiday movie A Sweet Christmas Romance. “I had more eyes on me this Saturday than any of my regular TV work.”
Several NBA players had a different outlook. “It’s a shame,” said NBA star LeBron James, who is a longtime aquaphobia sufferer. “Next year I expect more support from the NBA fanbase.”
