For years, pundits and reporters at Fox News have been scrutinizing the “Mainstream Media” for political bias. The term was popularized during the Obama administration, when personalities like Bill O’Reilly blasted the Mainstream Media for supporting Obama.
Now, with President Trump in office, the chronicle continues – that is, accusations that the Mainstream Media (oftentimes outlets like CNN and MSNBC) will attack the President every chance they get.
Last week, Tucker Carlson said, “The level of bias in the Mainstream Media is astounding. They won’t give Trump any credit… for anything he does.” An hour later, Sean Hannity hammered the New York Times, asserting, “This is just an example of what the Mainstream Media is doing in this country. It’s despicable.”
The narrative shifted on Monday when MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow shot back: “Hey Fox News hosts, have you looked at your ratings? You are a massive, massive news outlet. You are the very definition of the Mainstream Media.”
Maddow’s charge jolted the entire Fox News organization. It was a revelation that prompted commentators to acknowledge their status as a major news outlet, and even thank the MSNBC pundit for her scrutiny.
“I guess we are in the mainstream,” Bret Baier acknowledged in a segment on Tuesday. “I can’t believe I’m just now realizing it. On behalf of the Fox News crew, I’d like to issue a public apology to media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, and the Washington Post, as we’ve been misinterpreting the term for all these years.”
“I would like to thank Ms. Maddow for bringing this light,” added Ainsley Earhardt, co-host of Fox & Friends. “We are the Mainstream Media. We’re all in the same boat.”
Take that, Sean… you Fox News freak.
