Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said on Friday that the real problem in America is wealthy white men, and that the majority of them will end up “burning in hell for eternity.” In making the claim, Bezos quoted the Bible, asserting that it is difficult for a wealthy man to get into heaven, due to the pride and fame that comes from riches.
Quoting Matthew 19:24 (in the contemporary Message translation of the Bible), Bezos posed the question, “Do you have any idea how difficult it is for the rich to enter God’s kingdom?”
“Well let me tell you,” he answered. “It’s easier to gallop a camel through a needle’s eye than for the rich to enter God’s kingdom.”
Prominent white wealthy businessman have since taken issue with the Amazon founder’s controversial claim, due to the fact that he quoted from The Message translation, which they claim is a “loose, paraphrased,” and highly “idiomatic” version of The Bible.
“Who does Jeff think he is?” asked Bill Gates, who proudly mediates a Wednesday evening Bible study group called Billionaire Bible Thumpers. “Seriously, The Message? Real men read the King James Version.”
